Paul Bauer


Professor Paul Bauer has served as Director of the Northern Illinois University School of Music since 1994. Dr. Bauer has also served on the faculties at Chicago State University, Northwestern University, and Southwest Missouri State University. He has taught applied low brass, low brass instrumental techniques, jazz history, jazz arranging, music appreciation, and conducted jazz and concert bands. His bass trombone performance degrees are from Bowling Green State University (BM), University of North Texas (MM), and Northwestern University (DM).

He has performed as a bass trombonist numerous times with the Lyric Opera of Chicago, Chicago Symphony, and Grant Park Symphony, and has recorded with the Millar Brass Ensemble and Chicago Brass Choir. He has published several articles, presented at national and international conferences, and presented clinics in the Midwest and eastern United States, Canada, and South America. Despite offers of professional performance positions both symphonic and jazz, Bauer has dedicated his career to the field of education. In 1999 he was awarded the Distinguished Service Award from the Illinois Music Educators Association. Dr. Bauer is also a former President of the Association of Illinois Music Schools (AIMS).
