Robert Fleisher


Robert Fleisher attended the High School of Music and Art in New York City and earned the baccalaureate degree with honors at the University of Colorado. At the University of Illinois, where he received the Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees in composition, he served as a teaching assistant and a visiting lecturer and was a finalist for the Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching Award. He taught at U.C.L.A. for two years before joining the Northern Illinois University music faculty in 1983. Dr. Fleisher’s work has been supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities, National Foundation for Jewish Culture, Illinois Arts Council, Ruttenberg Arts Foundation, and artist residencies at Yaddo, Millay Colony, Virginia Center, Hambidge Center, Montalvo Center, and Mishkenot Sha’ananim. His book, Twenty Israeli Composers: Voices of a Culture, is published by the Wayne State University Press. Other writings have appeared in a variety of national and international journals, and in several online essays for the current edition of Tonal Harmony by Kostka & Payne. His music has been performed in Canada, France, Germany, Spain, and throughout the USA; recordings appear on Centaur and Capstone labels.
