Robert Fleisher attended the High School of Music and Art in New York City and graduated with honors from the University of Colorado. At the University of Illinois, where he earned the M.M. and D.M.A. degrees in composition, he served as a teaching assistant and a visiting lecturer. He taught at UCLA for two years before joining the NIU faculty in 1983. A composer and writer on diverse musical subjects, he has received support from the National Endowment for the Humanities, National Foundation for Jewish Culture, Illinois Arts Council, and Ruttenberg Arts Foundation, and has been awarded artist residencies at Yaddo, Millay Colony, Virginia Center, Hambidge Center, Montalvo Center and Mishkenot Sha’ananim. His music has been performed in Canada, France, Germany, Spain, and throughout the USA; recordings appear on Centaur and Capstone. Performances in 2008-09 include NIU, Ball State University (39th New Music Festival), Chicago Miniaturist Ensemble, Oklahoma City University (Society of Composers conference), and the New York City Electroacoustic Music Festival. His book, Twenty Israeli Composers, is published by the Wayne State University Press. Other writings appear in national and international journals, and in the online learning center of the leading music theory text, Tonal Harmony. He is a contributing composer and essayist in Notations 21 (2009), a collection of new music scores by composers from more than 50 nations.
