And, at Friday night’s banquet Rich Holly presented several awards.

Summer 2007

NIU Percussion area faculty members were busy in the summer of 2007! Here are a few of the noteworthy appearances we made:

Robert Chappell was on leave the spring semester 2007 and spent much of the time in Costa Rica where he composed new works that will be premiered at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention (PASIC) in November. In April, he was invited to perform and give masterclasses at the "Festival International de Marimbistas" in Tuxtla Gutierrez, Mexico. The performances at the festival alternated between traditional marimba bands from Chiapas and international artists from Japan, Sweden, Argentina, Chile and the U.S.

Robert continued as Program Director of the Birch Creek Music Center Percussion/Steelpan session July 2 to July 15 in Door County, Wisconsin for the 18th consecutive year. This year, the 37 students and 15 faculty members presented 9 concerts for over 2000 people.

In August, Liam Teague, virtuoso steelpannist and Director of Steelpan Studies at NIU and Robert traveled to Costa Rica to play concerts and present workshops as part of the Festival Diaspora Africana de Costa Rica. The main concerts will be played at the Teatro Nacional in San Jose with additional concerts in the Afro-Caribbean towns of Cahuita and Palmares. A workshop will be given at the Universidad Nacional in Heredia.

A number of new works will be premiered at PASIC in Columbus, OH in November. Prof. Teague and Chappell will perform Chappell's "Open Window", the winning composition of the 2006 PAS Composition Competition, the premiere of Chappell's "Sanchari" for marimba, steelpan and Indian tabla drums, and a new work by NIU percussion grad, Ben Wahlund for steelpan, piano, and 3 percussionists.  After that Liam's and Robert's group "Panoramic" will play Latin/Caribbean Jazz to close the concert.

Greg Beyer spent the better part of August in Brazil performing concerts with his duo, DUE EAST (Erin Lesser, flutes). The duo performed at the University of Campinas (UNICAMP) and the State University of São Paulo (UNESP). Both concerts were received with standing ovations and open enthusiasm for the music. Activities at UNICAMP also included workshops for percussionists, flutists, and composers. Electronic music composer, José Agosto Mannis, was the contact at UNICAMP, and Beyer is actively working with Mannis to develop an official agreement between UNICAMP and NIU to apply for federal funding from both the US and Brazil to support joint research and creative music projects, student exchanges, guest faculty visits, and the like.

In addition to these performance and educational activities, Beyer also worked in Brazil to further his research on the berimbau. He successfully conducted interviews with Mestre Valmir Santos Damasceno, a master of Capoeira Angola in Salvador, Bahia, and Naná Vasconcelos, internationally known berimbau virtuoso, in Recife, Pernambuco.

Cliff Alexis was a guest on the campuses of the Hartt School of Music at the University of Hartford (CT), and the University of Akron (OH). Cliff was also instrumental in the development of a new “G” pan recently, a collaborative effort between Cliff and builders in Trinidad.

Rodrigo Villanueva was really busy! From May 31 to June 2, he performed with The Edgar Dorantes Jazz Trio in Xalapa, Veracruz, Mexico. On May 31 he presented a Drumset Master Class in Xalapa, Veracruz, Mexico. Rodrigo had various performances throughout the summer with Madison jazz singer Jan Wheaton and the Sada Trio. On June 16 he performed at the Jazz at the Park Series in Madison with the Madison based jazz group"The Groove Project." From July 15-20 he directed the NIU Jazz Camp, directing the top jazz ensemble of the camp and performing with the Rodrigo Villanueva Jazz Quartet and the NIU Jazz Camp Faculty Combo.

From July 23 to August 3, Rodrigo served a 2-week residency at the only jazz school in Peru, the Jazz House Peru, directed by Joscha Oetz. There he taught workshops in Jazz Drumset, Arranging, Finale, private lessons and coaching and performing with the Jazz House Orchestra, directed by Carolina Araoz. In addition to these performances, Rodrigo performed with Lima jazz greats Javier Perez-Saco, Joscha Oetz, Rafael "Fusa" Miranda and Diego Salvador at the Jazz Zone on August 3.

In June Rich Holly appeared on a New York City television show entitled “Open.” Typically a talk show with several 10-minute segments, this episode was dedicated entirely to celebrating the life of the great percussionist Arnie Lang, former member of the New York Philharmonic. Other notable musicians on the show were drummer Terry Silverlight, bassist Will Lee, and percussionists Bobby Sanabria, Allan Molnar, and Gordon Gotlieb. In July, Rich began a second position here at NIU, that of Acting Director of the School of Art, which will continue until January 2008. In August Rich was a faculty member at KOSA 12 in Vermont   check out the link for more info.

Al O’Connor Retires

After 35 wonderful years of teaching and service to NIU, Al O’Connor has decided to fully retire. Although Al retired from his position as Associate Dean of NIU’s College of Visual and Performing Arts in 2000, he continued as co-director (along with Cliff Alexis) of the NIU Steel Band. Effective summer 2003, Al is fully retiring.

Al joined the NIU faculty in 1968 as head of percussion studies. During his tenure in that position he began the NIU Steel Band in 1973 – the country’s first university steel band. Over the years Al was instrumental in helping many other colleges, universities, and public schools develop their own steel band programs. It was also Al’s vision to hire the famed Blackearth Percussion Group as faculty in the 1970’s. In 1983 Al began his first administrative position as Assistant Chair of the NIU School of Music, and in 1989 became the Associate Dean of our College of Visual and Performing Arts. Throughout those administrative posts Al continued to direct the Steel Band.

Al’s presence will be sorely missed. We wish him the best of luck in his retirement.

Robert will receive a very generous grant for use in his teaching as well as one semester of release time toward the end of his four-year term. Congratulations Robert!!

February 2003: Current percussion major Linda Orlandi was one of 33 recipients campus-wide to receive NIU's elite USOAR grants (Undergraduate Special Opportunities in Artistry and Research). Linda will use her grant to study percussion and culture in Havana, Cuba during the summer of 2003. Congratulations Linda!!

Alum Garry Kvistad recently joined the percussion group NEXUS. According to NEXUS founding member Russell Hartenberger, "Garry has been a long-time friend of NEXUS. He has appeared with NEXUS at various times over the years as a guest. It is a very natural transition for him now to be a regular member of the group."

This also means that the two most recognizable percussion ensembles in North America (NEXUS and Percussion Group – Cincinnati) include members who are NIU percussion alumni.

The May 2002 issue of Modern Drummer magazine honors 13 colleges and universities as having the best programs for drumset study, and NIU is included in that select group of schools.

The NIU Steel Band traveled to Korea in May 2002 to perform in the opening ceremonies and other concerts of the 2002 Seoul Drum Festival.

NIU Steel Band places 2nd in 2000 World Steelband Festival

The NIU Steel Band, under the direction of Al O'Connor and Cliff Alexis, succeeded in winning second place in the finals of the 2000 World Steelband Festival held in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, Saturday, October 21, 2000. Their final score was 551.5 points out of 600.  The TCL Skiffle Bunch band from Trinidad took first place with a score of 576.5. NIU pulled out all of the stops for the finals - Cliff Alexis wrote new music for his calypso all night the night before and NIU Research Scholar Liam Teague played a solo - which has never been done before. NIU competed with bands from Trinidad & Tobago, Finland, United Kingdom, Switzerland, France, Grenada, and USA.

This event is important historically in that 1) Never before has a foreign (non-Trinidad/Tobago) band even gotten to the finals of the WSF, 2) Never before has a foreign band been a challenge to a Trinidad/Tobago band, and 3)  Wood-N-Steel (NIU Faculty member Robert Chappell composition) and Pan 2000 (Cliff Alexis composition) were considered innovations to this competition.
